Victorian style floor tile designs

Victorian tiles reflect an era of eclecticism and innovation, combining bold geometric patterning with a rich and varied colour palette. This era celebrated contrast, craftsmanship, and intricate design, resulting in floors that possess lasting character and beauty.

Striking black and white schemes remain a favourite for creating elegant, timeless hallways and pathways. For a softer, warmer look, red and yellow tones bring natural depth and a sense of heritage to any space.

Distinct geometric compositions, such as star and box capture the spirit of Victorian design. This recurring arrangement forms the foundation for many patterns within our collection, showcasing the versatility and rhythm typical of the period.

A defining feature of all our designs is the decorative border, providing structure and definition. The diamond border is an enduring favourite that complements both traditional and contemporary settings.

The inclusion of encaustic tiles further elevates a tile scheme. These decorated tiles, featuring emblematic motifs, are definitive marks of heritage, adding a sense of authenticity and artistry.

Our evolving collection features faithful reproduction Victorian designs alongside popular adaptations and colourways, enabling you to create a floor that feels both classic and unique.

Edwardian designs tend to use an earthy colour palette of red, brown, coffee, cognac, black, grey and white. Designs in the Edwardian period were simpler than the decorative Victorian patterns, using larger tile sizes and basic border patterns.

What makes a Victorian-style floor?

A Victorian-style tiled floor exemplifies the artistry of the Victorian era (1837–1901). This style is defined by colourful and intricate geometric patterns assembled using vitrified ceramic tiles, showcasing the meticulous craft that decorates prominent interior and exterior spaces.

Several characteristics typically define a mosaic floor in the Victorian style: precise repeating geometric patterns, traditional matte colour schemes, distinctive and decorative borders, unglazed vitrified ceramic tiles, expertly laid by hand and finely grouted.

Materials

Victorian floors stand the test of time. Unglazed vitrified tiles provide a robust and decorative finish to high traffic areas such as hallways, paths and steps. Their matte finish and through-body colour give each space a sense of permanence and elegance.

Geometric patterns

Victorian tile patterns embrace strict geometric order, from the classic chequerboard layout to the bold rhythm of star and box motifs. These tessellated designs utilise small, precisely shaped tiles to achieve balance and visual movement, reflecting the era's fascination with decoration.

Traditional colour palette

The colour schemes of the Victorian era featured natural clays that created a matte and earthy appearance. Designers used black and white, reds, browns, and yellows as standard, but often incorporated brighter and more saturated colours like pinks, greens, and blues. This rich colour palette remains essential for authentic reproduction designs today.

Decorative borders

The decorative border is a hallmark of Victorian tiled flooring, which completes any design by defining how it fits a space. This way of framing has similarities to woven rugs. Diamond and dogtooth borders are most common, whereas a border such as our Farringdon design adds opulent detail, enhancing the tiled floor's elegance and reflecting the era's luxurious aesthetic.
