Designs using encaustic tiles

Patterns featuring encaustic tiles have a refined, traditional look. Historically specified for more grandiose dwellings and public buildings, they bring a high level of decoration and artistry to tiled floors.

Today, this look is achievable using our heritage reproduction tiles, available in metric sizes, allowing encaustics to be used seamlessly across our full range of designs.

Our European-style encaustics are produced in 50 mm, 70 mm, and 100 mm square sizes, making them compatible with most geometric patterns. The larger 150 mm encaustic range features ornate motifs inspired by 19th- and early 20th-century Western European designs.

For restoration projects requiring imperial sizing, our traditional slip-inlaid encaustic range offers an authentic alternative. You can fully customise all types of encaustic tiles to match the desired period or pattern.

Manufactured to exceptional standards, these handmade tiles are traditionally set within borders or at intersections within the main field pattern, adding a new dimension of visual interest and craftsmanship.

Incorporating encaustics within a tile design brings a refined charm that is unmistakably Victorian, offering a luxurious way to elevate the detail and character of a geometric tiled floor.

The black and white chequerboard, a popular choice for its versatility, has been used and referenced throughout history in a multitude of architectural settings. Using two contrasting colours, this style of design perfectly compliments the period home as well as modern interiors.

Victorian tile designs were prized for both their beauty and ease of maintenance. The tradition of colourful and decorative mosaic tiling remains to this day and has grown in popularity over the last few decades.

Edwardian designs tend to use an earthy colour palette of red, brown, coffee, cognac, black, grey and white. Designs in the Edwardian period were simpler than the decorative Victorian patterns, using larger tile sizes and basic border patterns.

Georgian designs were neo-Classical in appearance predominantly using white and black tiles. Popular design motifs included large format chequerboards and octagon based patterns, along with Roman style micro mosaic schemes.
